Asymmetric Trade Costs: Agricultural Trade amongDeveloping andDevelopedCountries
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this article, the reasonswhydeveloping countries trade fewer agricultural products than developed countries are analyzed. Based on earlier findings that low trade volume in the agricultural sector is due to high trade costs, the focus is on evaluating the extent to which bilateral trade costs in the agricultural sector differ among trading partners. Using a neo-Ricardian trade model, the results show that systematically, asymmetric bilateral trade costs and variation in the level of agricultural productivity across all countries in the sample, are the main barriers to developing countries’ agricultural exports. In addition, low-income countries face higher trade costs to export than do high-income countries.

Investigating the importance of human and social capital in the trade of ECO members and their asymmetric effects on industrial and agricultural goods
According to Porter (1990) theory, countries go through different stages in the development path: the first stage is the export of raw materials and raw materials, the second stage is the export of industrial capital products, the third stage is the export of knowledge products and finally the class war for more wealth. . This paper examines the behavior of the development path through the trad...
متن کاملHigh Trade Costs and Their Consequences: An Estimated Dynamic Model of African Agricultural Storage and Trade
How large are trade costs in the world’s poorest countries and what are their consequences? I explore this question using a new dataset of monthly prices and production of 6 staple grains from 2003 to 2013 in 230 market catchment areas covering all 42 countries of continental subSaharan Africa. Using a new approach to identify cost parameters when trade and storage are unobserved, I estimate an...
متن کاملNonlinear Asymmetric Effects of Devaluation on Trade Balance: A Case Study of Iran and South Korea
The present paper analyzes the existence of a long-run relationship between the trade balance and exchange rate of Iran and South Korea by a new approach. It proposes an asymmetric co-integrating NARDL model by two positive and negative partial sum decompositions which can use mixed I (0) and I (1) variables by bounds testing approach. The proposed tests are based on calculated F –statistics an...
متن کاملGravity Redux : Structural Estimation of Gravity Equations with Asymmetric Bilateral Trade Costs ∗ December 18 , 2007
Theoretical foundations for estimating gravity equations were enhanced recently in Anderson and van Wincoop (2003). Though elegant, the model assumes symmetric bilateral trade costs to generate an estimable set of structural equations. In reality, however, trade costs (and trade flows) are not bilaterally symmetric. To allow for asymmetric bilateral trade costs, we provide an alternative framew...
متن کاملYield Variability and Agricultural Trade
We examine how changes in yield variability affect the welfare of cereal grain and oilseed buyers and producers around the world. We simulate trade patterns and welfare for 21 countries with a Ricardian trade model that incorporates bilateral trade costs and crop yield distributions. The model shows that world trade volumes would need to increase substantially if crop yield variability were to ...
